This is a list of notable software for creating, performing, learning, analyzing, researching, broadcasting and editing music. This article only includes software, not services. For streaming services such as iHeartRadio, Pandora, Prime Music, and Spotify, see Comparison of on-demand streaming music services. For storage, uploading, downloading and streaming of music via the cloud, see Comparison of online music lockers. This list does not include discontinued historic or legacy software, with the exception of trackers that are still supported.[1][2] For example, the company Ars Nova produces music education software, and its software program Practica Musica has remnants of the historic Palestrina software. Practica will be listed here, but not Palestrina.[3] If a program fits dozens of categories, such as a comprehensive DAW or a foundation programming language (e.g. Pure Data), listing is limited to its top three categories.

- Software » Max/MSP Max/MSP is a realtime visual programming environment for multimedia and interaction that's great for learning about digital signal processing, exploring new music-making ideas, hardware interfacing (everything from Wii remotes to iPhones), and more. Here are some things I've built with Max that people might find interesting.
- This interview describes Autechre's use of Max/MSP. 'Cycling 74's Max/MSP allows them to take the same creative approach in software, designing and implementing their own controllers, connections and sound generators.'
- MaxMSP is a visual programming language that helps you build complex, interactive programs without any prior experience writing code. MaxMSP is especially useful for building audio, MIDI, video, and graphics applications where user interaction is needed.
Max/MSP (sometimes referred to as MaxMSP, Max) was added by nitrofurano in Dec 2010 and the latest update was made in Sep 2019. The list of alternatives was updated Jul 2019. It's possible to update the information on Max/MSP or report it as discontinued, duplicated or spam. 'This book is a lucid and systematic introduction for beginners or intermediate users to all three components of the popular multimedia software Max/MSP/Jitter, covering MIDI, basic programming concepts, real-time audio/video manipulation, camera tracking, and alternate controllers.
